For English-born Canadian inventor Simon Wilby, the ultimate solution to poor-performing cellular phone batteries is simple – make full use of renewable solar energy. As fossil fuels become obsolete, eco-friendly options have become more popular energy resources even for running household devices.

His invention, The Smart One, was made with this purpose in mind. With a revolutionary solar cell design that makes use of plastic solar cell as opposed to silicon cell, Simon Wilby hopes to convert 3 billion mobile phones users to his light energy-dependent battery kit.

The Smart One, which hit the market in the first quarter of 2009, is a lithium type battery that is energized using the power of both natural and artificial light. Originally, it was invented to rely on solar energy, but, as Simon Wilby suggests ambient light, moon and ordinary light sources may also prove very effective. This is partially due to the fact that the construction material for the panel is so efficient that it can draw sufficient energy even when the source of light is rather weak.

As if to further establish himself as an advocate of green energy solutions, the CEO of Smart Power Inc. has projects all lined up for future developments. His plans of marketing solar powered smart batteries and street lights are well on their way. But, first in the lineup is the internationalization of his pet project- The Smart One.
